The simple beauty of SPIVVY frames is captivating. At once elegant and rugged, these frames are incredible examples of Japanese craftsmanship and they are finding fans in San Francisco with the speeds of Shinkansen. And modified per our request, the frames now fit Caucasian faces better than ever!!!!
With second delivery of SPIVYY now on our shelves and with pending arrivals from two other Japanese eyewear design powerhouses - Propodesign and SpecEspace - Spectacles for Humans will be offering the most incredible collection of handcrafted Japanese frames outside of Japan.
Believe it or not... After 20+ years, Spectacles for Humans' official band is back together. Yes, I am the dude in that smoking-hot Adidas sweatshirt, the lead singer.
With our last official concert played back in June of 1986, ( hope you're enjoying the vintage pic), it looks like the guys are getting their act back together and there are talks of a possible, very special reunion performance this October with yours truly doing the vocals.
The management of SFH raised a legitimate question though... Do we rock first, then shop at SILMO, or should we just take the show on the road and go straight to Japan, and do it all there?... There is quite the distance between us these days, so time will tell. In other words, we are talking, but regardless of the outcome, they kick ass and all of us here are very proud of our peeps!!!!
GLARE has made its debut this Easter weekend and there was more eye contact in Noe Valley than some see in years. We knew from the start, we are doing something special, but we did not anticipate such a warm welcome. Not only we did killer business on the very first day (that's always nice) but the comments and overall reaction from customers was resonating so well with our feelings. And that was what we were looking for. In the world of sunwear where big logos are everything, we are challenging the common perception of cool. Sure, intelligent consumer always knows what's up, avoids excessive branding, yet still manages to find ways to express individuality and play pool with like-minded people. But when it comes to eyewear, current choices are such, it is almost impossible to avoid the vulgarity and even the most independent minded shoppers eventually succumb to inexplicable - eyewear with logos!! A travesty, and we intend to fight it.
At both GLARE and Spectacles for Humans, we take the hardest approach to spectacles , like that hard gay dude in Japan almost. Devoted to quality, design and understatement, we've become a leader of all things current in eyewear and it is no wonder San Francisco is the place where the concept is borne. Independent and liberated, we live and think free and see the future without labels.
Spring is in the air and with our second store open, we are (again) helping San Franciscans see good while looking hot and clever.
At Spectacles for Humans, the newDeromeBrennerstuff is pretty much the only thing we sold for the past 2 days and working with shapes and colors, we predict this will be the most successful DB release. Like ever. Great job!!!! Xavier and Aurelia are making their second official US appearance next month at Vision Expo East in Nuevo York and we expect a riot in their booth.
GRAZ sunnies are the bomb!! We don't really know or care who else has them in US, if anyone, but whatever we've got, one half is gone. And guess what, from now on, you will have to prove it us you deserve to own a pair. Oh yeah, and the price went up too!!!
It's past midnight, and there is probably still a line outside of our store to buy a pair of MYKITA acetates.
Heads up!!MYKITAand DeromeBrenner are working on a project together. No details yet, but go tell everyone, ' cause you're the first to hear about it.
Spivvy, Spivvy, Spivvy!!! To express how happy we are to see this line doing well is simply impossible. We asked SPIVVY folks to customize their frames for us, without affecting the design of course, and as a result, the frames are translating very well into our market. 2 more incredible lines from Japan are making their way to US for the first time as you read - PropoDesign and Spec Espace - and we can't wait to tell you more!!!
At GLARE, things are looking scary good. More details tomorrow but we can telly you, all new collections are blowing our minds.
For the past few months we at Spectacles for Humans labored intensely on a new project - GLARE, our sunwear store. Putting together a selection of sunwear brands that reflects our philosophy wasn't exactly easy. Cutting and slicing through enormous jungle of cheap and loud logos and over-the-top shapes, we were after high fashion, superior optics, exceptional quality and modern design... but apparently these are rare commodities in eyewear nowadays. But that is another topic altogether and we have no desire to traverse the swamp today. What's important is that we have succeeded!!! Given the size of our new space - hardly 200 square feet - once settled on a brand, we had to be extra selective with our choices, and as a result the final line up is definitely looking sweet. DITA, Salt Optics, Beausoleil, KSUBI, BLINDE, several super-hot collabs from Linda Farrow Vintage, Henrik Vibskov and ... much more to come in April-May after our trip to New York!!!!!
GLARE is located on the same street as Spectacles for Humans and with less than 2 blocks between us, we'll be able to help and assist you with all of your optical needs quickly and efficiently. Please visit GLARE at 4010 24th street cross street Noe. Open from 11 am until 630 pm Wednesday through Saturday and 11 until 6 on Sundays. Closed Monday and Tuesday. For more information please call 415-341-1454.
The '08 Collections from Xavier Derome and Aurelia Brenner are here! The multi-layered Huggys, the clever and subtle Stardusts, the brilliantly colored Harlems and the superb Jackys. New colors, new shapes and more!!
Trained in the mountains of Nepal by fearless Ghurkas, Mark's Pugs are his personal bodyguards and stay with him at all time, protecting him from dangers that lurk on the streets of San Francisco. With valuable and ultra-rare model Walter by MYKITA now in his possession, the dogs will have to stay much closer to him than usual.
The guys from SALT Optics were in our hood this week and popped in to show new collection and talk the optical talk.
We've been partners with SALT for over a year and have nothing but good things to say about them and their products. And let us state the obvious - SALT is quickly becoming a major force on sunglass arena and we are glad to be of help in that process. Known for their superb lenses, SALT designers always managed to combine fashion and function in numerous attractive packages. Experimenting with modern shapes and bringing strong vintage elements in the final product is a signature and it is definitely helping SALT to stand out in the crowd. Realizing that cutting corners is a sure path to disaster, folks at SALT are always insisting on the best possible materials available today and never shy away from challenges, such as crafting sunnies from a solid block of acetate ... 10mm thick!!!
Model Vance, below, from 2008 Collection is an example of just that.
Staying true to their principals and going the distance to deliver the best possible optics, SALT guys always keep the fashion junkies in mind and insist on fitting all of their styles, even undisguised crowd pleaser like Corsa, with polarized lenses. Shown below in Silver with Double Gradient!! Polarized lenses this Corsa is as beautiful as it is functional, all at once.
2008 Collection from SALT Optics is coming next week to GLARE, our new sunwear specialty store/project which is scheduled to open next weekend.
Like Red Pandas from the Himalayas, MYKITA acetate frames are a rare and elusive animal. Just when you think you have a chance to view one, it disappears, leaving you wishing you'd acted faster.
With production still at low speeds and demand far greater than the company imagined, plastic styles like Cedric and Enzo are selling mostly from our waiting list and if one ends up on a shelve for some crazy reason, it sells within days, if not hours. The two sets of Cedric in Warm Brown we received a couple weeks ago sold on the same day within hours of being out of the box. Huh? Where does it leave us, we ask??
So you understand that when we get a shipment of acetates from MYKITA, we are excited, and when some of these acetates are sunnies!!!, we grab our air guitars.
Model Daniel, below, is in stock in Black. SFH price is $495.
Model Fletcher, below, is in stock in Black and Cool Grey. SFH price is $495.
Model Walter, below, is in stock in Black, Cool Grey and Olive. SFH price is $465.
The video from Fettes Brot has already been posted here, a few weeks ago, but now, with model Walter in stock, here it is again. Besides funny lyrics, girls and music, please pay attention to the way the frames fit these guys.
The Spring is here and we at Spectacles of Humans are walking on air, stimulated by recent arrivals from Japan and Germany. Seeing a girl's eyes light up after trying on a pair of Spivvy's, watching a guy shaking his head in disbelief at the way REIZ frames are built. You know, in the end, this is what makes it for us. It is when people find products they can relate to, we know it was all worth it from the start.
The products we choose for Spectacles for Humans are not ordinary and even though we face daily onslaught from various demanding, insisting, complaining and bitching entities, we are willing to press on in the name of perfection. Competitors, wannabe suppliers, even well wishers, everyone seems to be breathing something in our face, but we simply brush them off and go on about what we do best - selecting perfect spectacles for people...
It's just another day at Spectacles for Humans.
The Last Shadow Puppets"The Age of Understatement"
It's basically a land rush at this point, but we feel like we should let the readers know. If any of you ever considered models Ratte or Hecht in any color, and especially in Black Transparent, or Chestnut/Caramel (shown above), or any of the styles in Petrol from Colors Collection, and could never get your hands on one because we are always out, better step on it now. We have several of each in stock as of yesterday!
And remember, Spectacles for Humans webstore is coming soon (we'll be opening with DeromeBrenner and REIZ ) but ordering through email or over the phone has never been such a rewarding experience.
